Training of Writers Program, 2010-2011
Pending approval of funding from the U.S. Department of Education, the Council for Economic Education will train up to 12 writers of economic education instructional materials from the United States and 12 writers from partner countries in a five-day workshop in Washington, DC, from July 31 – August 8, 2010. This program is not a study tour. It requires extensive writing and group work during the workshop, as well as continued writing from August 2010 – April 2011.
During the workshop, individuals will be assigned to work in small groups consisting of U.S. and international participants. After the workshop, participants will be required to develop economics lessons that use an active-learning approach and that are appropriate for use in their respective countries. The Council for Economic Education is seeking outstanding economic educators (particularly classroom teachers) who have the commitment and support to develop high-quality economic education instructional materials after completing this program. Successful applicants will demonstrate a commitment to economic education and to working with their state council and/or local center for economic education. Participants will be expected to engage in intensive writing activities during and after the workshop and will be required to field-test the lessons they develop in local classrooms. The program requires a commitment to complete lesson writing assignments and field testing between August 2010 and April 2011.
Applicants should teach grades 1 through 12 and teach economics as a separate subject or incorporate significant economic content coverage in history, social studies, and other subjects. Overview of the Training of Writers Program
The Training of Writers Program provides an opportunity for U.S. teachers to work with teachers from other countries on the development of economic education lessons. Part of the Council for Economic Education EconomicsInternational® Program, the Training of Writers program is conducted once a year, generally in the fall semester. U.S. teacher participants spend 10-12 days with colleagues from several other countries, meeting in one of the international countries for a series of professional development workshops that train participants on curriculum writing skills. Following the program, participants work in teams to develop an economics lesson plan that uses an active-learning approach and is appropriate for use in their respective countries. Feedback is provided and the U.S. faculty work with the writers on improving their lessons for publication.
The Council seeks outstanding economic educators (including classroom teachers) who have the commitment and support to continue developing high-quality economic education instructional materials after completing this program. Successful applicants must demonstrate a commitment to economic education and to working with their state Council and/or Center for Economic Education.
Applicants are strongly encouraged to obtain letters of recommendation from the Director of their Center for Economic Education. The Center web page helps identify a school's Center and gives complete contact information.
This program is usually offered once a year, and is dependent on funding. Check back here or go to the Council for Economic Education web site for the most up-to-date information on upcoming Training of Writers programs.
