Econ Illinois:
Focus: Globalization - February 19, 2010
Econ Illinois and the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago hosted area teachers for a day-long conference on global issues and how to integrate a global perspective into the classroom curriculum.
Carl Tannenbaum, Ph.D., economist with the Chicago Fed, provided an overview of current global issues that students should know and understand. Tannenbaum’s presentation was followed by demonstrations of classroom lessons that can help teachers integrate these global topics into their social studies curriculum at the middle and high school levels.
Following lunch, four teachers who have participated in the national Council for Economic Education’s EconomicsInternational programs shared their experiences with International Study Tours, the Training of Writers program, and International Classroom Partnerships. Conference participants learned about current opportunities for participation in these international programs.
At the conclusion of the day, Cindy Ivanac-Lillig, Community Outreach Specialist at the Fed, introduced attendees to the Euro Challenge, another global education opportunity for teachers that is sponsored by the Federal Reserve system.
All teachers attending received a copy of Focus: Globalization from the Council for Economic Education or (for middle grades), the publication Wide World of Trade. These lesson packages will enable the participating teachers to help their students better understand our global economy.
