Econ Illinois:
Teach Chicago Children to Save!
Business Volunteer Information
Teach Chicago Children to Save is a volunteer opportunity for Chicago-area business leaders that links them to local schools for a story-based lesson on savings. Volunteers will be paired with first, second or third grade classrooms and will spend about 45 minutes in the classroom reading a storybook and presenting a pre-packaged lesson that teaches the importance of savings. The Chicago program is sponsored through a grant from Bank of America, and coordinated by Econ Illinois.
Econ Illinois will provide volunteers with all materials needed for each classroom, including a training CD ROM to demonstrate the classroom experience and help you prepare to present the lesson. Econ Illinois will ensure you are completely prepared to go to a designated classroom, provide a literature experience by reading a book, and conclude with an easy lesson and activity. Again, the total classroom time is about 45 minutes. When possible, we may ask a volunteer to present to several classes at the same school during one morning or afternoon visit.
Classroom packages include a storybook and the accompanying lesson on savings, which the volunteer will leave in the classroom at the end of the session. We also encourage you to provide a promotional item as a gift from your company or business, to leave with the children (i.e., pencils, etc.)
We ask that you volunteer personally and/or recruit fellow colleagues or employees. Please specify from the dates listed when you are available; the classroom visits will be matched with those dates for the volunteers.
To be part of this exciting volunteer opportunity, contact Lisa Donnini, TCSD Coordinator at icee_lisa@runbox.com or phone 1.877.688.ICEE (4233).
We hope we can count on you to volunteer personally and/or recruit others for this opportunity. Please respond right away so we can schedule your training and in-school presentation. We hope you will join us in our commitment to Teach Chicago Children to Save!
